June 29, 2003
I updated the main page. I got rid of the disclaimer page cause there shouldn't be anything offensive enough to warrant it...yet. August 12, 2002 As you may have noticed I haven't been able to work on the above picture, let alone the next page. This has mostly been due to time that I have to spend on my final project. And I also got a new job. It's 3rd shift (10:30p - 6a). Plus I'm spending some time on Mondays working at my old job. So I've decided to not update until school is over in another four weeks or so. My next update will happen when I have finished the next page and added a links section. I may be able to add the links section sooner (say in about three weeks) since it's almost finished. Until then I found an artist whose art and stories are really quite entertaining and some of 'em can even be read in like the 10 minutes of spare time I have during the day. His name is Derek Kirk and you can read his stuff at Small Stories. I feel I should change my intro page to "Updated whenever I have the @#&@$! time." August 7, 2002 Well damn! I wasn't able to stay up Tuesday as I'd hoped. I had to wake up early Wednesday morning. I did work on the page on Monday though, so I thought I'd update with that page. This page was pretty easy to do, actually I made it pretty easy to do so I'd be able to put it up faster. That's going to change. My emphasis is going to shift to slow quality over fast crappiness. Then if follows, logically, that I'm going to stop apologizing for delays. I get up what I can, when I can, and for now that's going to have to be good enough. It doesn't help that I just re-thought the thumbnails that I had planned for the next few pages. It still requires some more work, but the next page looks to have about 10-15 panels on it. The size of the page is the same, but the action demands a frantic pace of panels. As such it'll likely take me a long time to work on it. The main reason I'm doing this comic is because drawing is fun. Sometimes I put so much pressure on myself to meet my own deadlines that I forget to have fun. I'm looking forward to the next few pages. However, I will take my time on them and really have some fun doing them, so I apologize in advance for the delays. Doh! didn't I say I'd stop doing that...no more apologies...sta-a-a-rting NOW! Oh BTW I'll still be updating weekly, but I won't pressure myself into doing a finished page each week. August 5, 2002 Well, I didn't finish the page today like I hoped I would. I had plenty of time this weekend, but I ended up wasting it away somehow. Since I've been doing this page in steps it occured to me to document my process for the final project in our 'History of Art' class. This page WILL be done on Wednesday. I'm going to switch the official update day to Wednesday since it usually ends up defaulting to that anyway. If, instead of checking in weekly to find half-finished pages, you'd like to be notified when the first chapter is completed (probably in 10 or so more pages) then email me at mital@earthlink.net and I'll let you know when it's done. I'll still update weekly with something, but I figured I'd offer this alternative. There are some difficult pages coming up so delays may actually worsen. I was going to put up some index card comics, but it turns out that I'm too self-conscious. I began to stress out over the quality of every comic. So when and if I ever get over my self-consciousness then I'll try the whole index-card comic thing again. And I'll end on this note, Altbrand finally put up my 24 hour comic. Go see it if you haven't, some of you may be getting photocopied versions of this comic, possibly in the mail or possibly in person. July 29, 2002 So I kept my promise and actually uploaded my pencils for page four and finished my colors for page three. You can view the thumbnail for page four here. Recently I've really been thinking about putting Sarasen Fusion on hold until this quarter is over. The main reason being that I can't ever seem to get enough time to do a full page. What really irritates me, however, is that I often have to accept bad drawing or poor execution of a concept simply because I don't have time to fix it. After a lot of thought, I decided to continue doing as much as I can weekly. I figure that if I were to put SF on hold, it may go away like a lot of other things I've started and never finished. I don't want this comic to be like that. Some days I wish I could just plug my brain into the computer and show you the story I see in there. While my images seem to get closer to the ones in my head, they're still not there yet. I'm sure a lot of people have this problem at one time or another...stuff always seems and sounds cooler in your head. As far as the pencils go...there's going to be some changes. My process usually has one more stage where I transfer my pencils to bristol. I usually clean up the drawing and improve it some more then. Yeah, it is a pain to transfer my pencils, but I need that safety net otherwise I end up wasting too much time on the pencils. Things that'll change: Morse's (that's the character's name...it hasn't come up yet, but there you go) overdone drapery in the first panel and his horrible close-up. It's really difficult (for me anyway) to do a close-up of this size. As such, I did mess up on it. The 'X' and 'Z' lines (if you don't know what I'm talking about buy one of Marshall's video's or DVD's) look like they're on the same plane, making it all 2d lookin'. I'll be re-drawing the head on tracing paper and scanning it in separately...let's hope it turns out better. Now for the 'promises I can't possibly' keep portion. Next week I'll have pages four (this page) and five (the next page) colored. Not only that, I'll finally add a links page and implement a new comic. This new comic will be lame, lame, and lame. It will feature poor cartooning, worse dialogue, bad jokes, and won't make any sense whatsoever. It'll also be done entirely during breaks at school on index cards...it'll be called 'Index Card Comics'...clever eh? This'll allow me to feel more productive, without actually doing a lot of extra work (he said hopefully), and maybe I'll learn some stuff too. As usual, I'd like to say more to my anonymous audience, (is anyone even reading these?) but it'll have to wait. I've still got some homework to do. July 23, 2002 Once again...I'm a day late on putting up the thumbnail I said I'd put up yesterday. Such is life. This hideous thumbnail is how I start out all my work. Actually I do anywhere from 3-10 thumbnails and then pick my favorite one. Lately I've been using graph paper to thumbnail, no particular reason...just felt like it. All the thumbnails are about 2"x3" in size. I blew this one up so you can see the relation to the finished page better. Well I've had a very bad day that promises to carry into tomorrow, so I'm going to sign off now. I'll be updating again next Monday. |
